A LEAGUE WIN TO START TO THE NEW MILLENNIUM FOR SWANAGE CRICKET CLUB

The first year of the new Millennium was a mixed year for Swanage Cricket Club. The year was always going to be difficult on the field but there was a big difference in the fortunes of the Saturday sides compared with the Sunday sides.a

On Saturday the team had an excellent start to the year stringing together some comprehensive victories. There followed a mid-season lull with a couple of defeats but a return to winning ways helped the side climb back to the top of the league where they remained for the rest of the season to clinch not only promotion to Division 1 but with it the championship. Congratulations must go to all those who played a part in this win.

The Sunday sides didn't have such good years. The 1st XI struggled with a lack of quality players all year even though those who did play tried their hardest but all the close results went against Swanage which just about sums up their year. Craig Wells had another superb year with the bat and occasionally with the ball and led the side well from the front but without quality players it was always going to be a difficult year and they eventually ended up third from bottom.

The Sunday 2nd XI fared even worse and didn't win their first game until well into the second half of the season but this was quickly followed by another win. Unfortunately with call ups in to the 1st XI the side was too weak for Division 3 and ended up in the bottom two.

Throughout the year, even with so many defeats the morale in all the sides has remained good and this has helped see us through a difficult season.

Off the field we are very fortunate to have such a good set of Officers and Committees that run all aspects of the Club from the Management Committee through Selection, Bar and Youth Committees. Please give your support whenever asked.

We have some important events coming up in the next couple of months that need all the support possible to keep the Club financially secure for the winter months. On Saturday 16th September the RNLI are holding a Dinner/Dance at the Club with a possibility of 250 guests. We will need as many bar staff and helpers as possible to make sure this function is a success for all concerned. At the end of October there will hopefully be a Halloween Night organised by the Round Table again please help with the bar.

Finally there is Craig and Julie's Wedding Reception on Saturday 2nd December to round the Millennium off.
