SATURDAY 1st XI (Presented by G. Watson) This was our first year in Division
One. Even though it was a
better standard there were no outstanding sides and therefore we were
able to hold our own against most sides.
We went from strength to strength as the season progressed.
We did lack a couple of good opening bowlers but on one
occasion we had a “guest” player who did make a big difference.
In the end we finished mid-table.
On many occasions though, we could have done much better and
finished in a much higher position. SUNDAY 1st XI (Presented by R. Barker) The early part of the season was
very damp and the Sunday 1st XI started their cricket on 20th
May. The first two games
were rained off – probably just as well as the opposition was West
Moors (home) and Gillingham (away) – both tough opposition.
Our first match was away at Moordown.
One eye on the wicket and one eye on the pitch next door!!
Tim Edgar’s day with 64 runs and 5 wickets, supported by Nick
Brown with 30 not out. The
next weekend we travelled to Bournemouth 2nd XI – Swanage
were 137 all out – thanks to tail-enders Wilcox & Churchill.
Bournemouth were all out for 100.
Wilcox and Norman with 3 wickets each, Barker and Kirby two
wickets each. Unbeaten in
May!!! June was different – Old
Blandfordians 165-6 and Swanage 98-9 in 45 overs with only 3 players
reaching double figures. The
following week we travelled to Mudeford – 226 all out.
Buck & Dyer both scoring well with middle 30’s.
Highlight of the day was Terry Buck’s catch – actually
running around the boundary – not sure if it was two hands or one.
Next we were at home to Cheselbourne.
Swanage 231-6 thanks to Craig’s 125 not out and Tim’s 43.
Enter Wilcox and Wells – Wilcox 5 for 24 and Wells 3 for 14.
Cheselbourne all out for 137.
The following week Winterbourne Kingston made 197 for 7 with
Swanage all out for 158 in 42 overs.
Elfes, Dyer and Norman showing most resistance with the bat. Our first game in July was against
old rivals, Ashmore.
Roger was Captain for the day.
Ashmore scored 255-5. Swanage
gave a great reply with 210-8. Honours
for the day to the Clark family – Johnny (50) and Peter (99) –
avoiding jug!! Next came
Gillingham at home – we actually won the toss!!
Batted on a very hot day with Haines (61) and Holland (43)
making a century partnership ably supported by Edgar (47) Elfes (32)
and Norman (29*) meant Swanage totalled 235-5.
Wilcox and Norman did the damage with the ball – Wilcox 4-36
and Norman 3-39. Gillingham
were eventually all out for 180 in 39 overs.
The next game was away at West Moors.
Very poor wicket, very unsporting side, we lost badly – it
was a poor day. Roger was
Captain again the following week at Bournemouth.
We had a very weak batting side and were all out for 116. Bournemouth made 117-2 in 21 overs. Against Moordown at home – Wycherley and Edgar put on a 68
run partnership with N. Brown and J. Wormold scoring well, forced
Swanage to 197 all out. Avery,
Barker and Norman tore the heart out of the Moordown batting with
three wickets apiece. They
were all out for 130 in 31 overs. August started badly.
We travelled to Old Blandfordians and with Peter Clark top
scoring with 55 were all out for 143. The fielding was the worst I had seen with only Avery and
Barker bowling well and we lost by 7 wickets.
The following week saw one of the best games of cricket for a
long time at Swanage. Mudeford
batted first and scored 261-8 in 45 overs with Kirby taking 3 wickets,
Elfes and Barker two apiece on a very good batting surface.
Enter the Clark’s, Johnny and Peter, putting on a 94 run
partnership, keeping us on track.
The new batsman, P. Kirby, batted very well, scoring 88 runs
very quickly. Half those
runs were 6’s and 4’s!! He
was well supported by Dyer, Norman and Wormold.
We lost by 10 runs after a great day’s cricket.
The next game was away at Cheselbourne.
The changing rooms were poor, pitch was awful, team awful.
We were all out for 64 with 26b of those being extras.
What a difference a week makes.
They scored their runs in 13 overs for the loss of two wickets
(if you played cricket there all season you would need health
cover!!). Next we played
Winterbourne Kingston (or was that Dewlish?).
A very young side turned out with Roger as Captain again and
Dewlish (or was that Winterbourne Kingston!!) scored 242 all out. Wilcox took 4 wickets, Avery and Norman 3 each.
Wycherley and Holland batted well, in fact Holland having
scored 84* unfortunately ran out of overs.
Swanage made a respectable 205-5 in reply.
The last game saw us travel to our old rivals Ashmore.
I myself have not played there for the last two seasons, but
nothing has changed, except the pitch has more moss on it!!
Swanage batted first with determination amongst hostile
bowling. James Harris put
in one of the best displays with guts, aggression and good batting.
Tim Edgar only had one bruise – from his rib cage to his
hipbone, but did manage to hit the ball every so often!!
A good show of batting all round in difficult conditions –
168 all out in 43 overs. With
the threat of rain, Ashmore were quick to get amongst the runs,
scoring 172-2 in 28.3 overs. Overall results were – Played 18,
Won – 5, Lost 11, Cancelled – 2 I would like to thank Tom for the
wickets, Sue Avery for the help with the teas, Mike Budd for scoring
and all the players who, through thick and thin, kept going throughout
the season. Swanage
Cricket Club did very well to put out three teams most weekends and we
should be proud of our performance over the last season. Ron Barker Sunday 1st XI
Captain SUNDAY 2nd XI
(Presented by G. White) At the lat AGM, when it was agreed
that Tom Yeates and myself should jointly share the management of the
Division 8 side, there were two mistakes made.
The first was to badly under-estimate the standard of
opposition in the League, and the second was to badly over-estimate
the ability of a greying 61 year-old to have the legs to last the
season – and I don’t mean Tom!! Personally, the season has been a
major disappointment, simply because of the lack of ability to be able
to compete, even on the very few occasions when we were strengthened
by the inclusion of 1st XI players.
The decision to run this team wasn’t at any time the wrong
decision but very rarely have we had within the side players of the
ability that kids need around them, that they can learn from, which
was certainly the object of my decision to play and my understanding
of the Members intentions at the AGM.
For me it’s been a long hard season, which, but for a few
bright moments has been difficult.
For the kids that have played, they have never flagged, never
let Tom or myself down, and I’m sure if they are encouraged, will
continue to give good service to Swanage CC. The highlights of the season were
Ashley King’s 49, when he played some shots far beyond his years,
some of the bowling of James Pond, young Pete Barker (it’s not easy
opening the batting every week against grown men) and the fielding
plus 110% support of “young” Tatty King, he’s been
indispensable! The low
spot being the cancellation of the fixture against Thornford due to a
lack of players on a Sunday afternoon when we managed to have 18
players available for a friendly on the previous Friday (a working
day). Do we get our
priorities wrong I wonder? For next season – well that’s
up to you all. If you
want these kids to have somewhere to play, get along to the AGM and
make your voice know. One
last thing, which seems to have been mostly ignored during the season,
so I will repeat it now. These
kids are not the finished articles – THEY NEED YOUR HELP. Gwill White Sunday 2nd XI
Captain The Chairman then thanked all the
Captains and Vice-Captains for their hard work throughout the season. RULE CHANGES: Rule 2 ( c ). The proposal was for this rule to
be changed to: “To do all such things as are
incidental or conducive to the attainment of these objects, including
the purchase of and sale to Members and their Guests of refreshments

be changed to: “Honorary Visiting Members –
