Result: Swanage won by 79 runs.

Details:

J.Stoodley and M.Brannan bowled well to restrict Swanage to only 16 runs of the first nine overs. Then Craig Wells released the shackles by hitting three fours and a six off Brannan’s fifth over. When Craig Matthews joined Wells, both players defended well but attacked whenever possible to produce an excellent 95 run partnership. R.Sellars and R.Haddow bowled challenging spells before Haddow had Matthews out Leg Before Wicket. Wells was now playing fluently, hitting some glorious cut and pull shots to the top and bottom boundaries. After Sellars disposed of the Swanage middle order, Wells and Tony Bessant made sure that Wayfarers were set a high total.

Wayfarers soon lost an early wicket but Phil Williams and C.Wyatt started to play confidently against the bowling of Ryan Norman and Guy Watson. Then an unusual incident occurred. Williams advanced down the pitch to Watson but missed the ball, which rebounded off his front pad some yards back towards the bowler. Watson then ran towards the ball with the intention of picking it up and running out Williams, who was still well out of his crease. Instead of retreating back, batsman Williams ran towards the ball, picked it up and threw a catch to an astonished Watson. After some thought, Watson appealed to the umpire, who consulted with his colleague and, after further deliberation, gave Williams out ‘Obstructing the Field’ (rather than the expected ‘Handled the Ball’). Norman soon bowled Wyatt with a superb outswinger which just clipped the off stump. Swanage now took charge of the game through the medium pace of Craig Matthews and the spin of Bill Jones. Hard though Wayfarers tried, they could not cope with the combination of Matthews’ accuracy and Jones’ clever flight. Taking the last seven wickets for 47 runs, Swanage gained a convincing victory in the thirty fourth over.

Date and place of Match: Sunday June 23 rd, Away. League: NSA Sunday Division 3.

Scoreboard: Broadstone 328 - 1

( M.Spraggs 183*, S.Brown 60*, J.Stone 45.)

Swanage 246 - 7

( T.Edgar 102, T.Buck 31. J.Stone 3 - 39.)

Result: Swanage lost by 82 runs.

Details:

Matthew Spraggs put Swanage to the sword on an excellent batting pitch at the Delph. First he put on 101 in an opening partnership with J.Stone, who also played a fine innings full of straight aerial drives. Then he opened out into full attack as he put on an unbroken 227 with S.Brown. Despite dropping two catches, the Swanage bowlers and fielders stuck to their task well but Spraggs was not to be denied, running short singles and hitting huge straight and pulled sixes into the trees. His innings contained thirteen fours and eight sixes.

In reply, Swanage looked to be in trouble when they lost four cheap wickets but Tim Edgar and Terry Buck saved them from further embarrassment in a partnership of 104. Edgar went on in style, hitting a series of fine on drives and pull shots to reach a deserved century and give Swanage a respectable total.

Date and place of Match: Sunday June 23 rd, at Home. League: NSA Sunday Division 8.

Scoreboard: Boscombe Celtonians 154

( P.Dickenson 56, T.Sam 25, C.Harrison 20. T.Yeates 3 - 20.)

Swanage Second Eleven 83

( R. Dickenson 4 - 17.)

Result: Swanage lost by 71 runs.

Details:

Swanage bowled and caught well to dismiss the Celtonians for 154. However, Celtonian opening bowlers opened with a series of maidens and their overall bowling attack was very strong for this division. Only Peter Dyer and John Hardy, who both scored 17, were able to make any impression.
